Halogen count and distance from the wall

Enter the size and type of the space. You get the number of halogens needed for standard lighting, their spacing from each other and from the wall, and a simple layout sketch.

How many halogens are needed for 20 m²?

For a 5 × 4 m living room (20 m²) with a 2.8 m ceiling, general lighting of 150 lux is enough. With a 10 W halogen of about 900 lumens and a 60° beam angle, 8 halogens are needed: two rows of four along the length of the room. Along the length, the halogens are 125 cm apart and about 60 cm from the wall; the two rows are 2 m apart and 1 m from the walls. The average illuminance comes to about 157 lux. With 7 W, 550-lumen halogens, 15 are needed in three rows of five.

How is the halogen count calculated?

This calculator uses the lumen method which is the basis of indoor lighting calculation:

Count = (required lux × area) ÷ (lumens per halogen × utilisation factor × maintenance factor)

Halogen distance from the wall and from each other

Distance from the wall

For general lighting, the distance from the halogen to the wall is usually half the distance between the halogens so the corner does not stay dark. If you want the wall, board or cabinet itself to be lit, place the halogen 30 to 60 cm from the wall.

Distance between halogens

The smaller the beam angle and the lower the ceiling, the smaller the light spot, and the closer the halogens must be. With a 2.8 m ceiling and 36° to 60° halogens, a spacing of 90 to 140 cm is typical. A 24° halogen is for accent light, not general lighting.

Above the bed and TV

Do not place a halogen directly above the head position on a bed; a person lying down looks straight into the light. Do not place halogens in front of a television either, so the reflection does not fall on the screen.

Exact layout on your own plan

This calculator is for a rectangular space and a first estimate. In the Tlux software you send a PDF plan; for each room of any shape you get the exact position of the halogens, a lux map, a 3D rendering, a glare check and a ceiling cutting plan for the electrician.

Frequently asked questions

How far should a halogen be from the wall?

For general lighting, half the distance between the halogens; for example, if they are 120 cm apart, 60 cm from the wall. To light the wall, 30 to 60 cm.

Is a diffuser halogen better than a module halogen?

A diffuser has a softer spread, but its milky surface is visible from every angle and it catches the eye. A halogen with a deeper lamp (darklight) throws the light onto the surface and is less visible itself; for living rooms and bedrooms it is more relaxing.
